Quick Facts and Details Worth Knowing About a Discogram

A discogram is a diagnostic test using x-rays, which is used for examining intervertebral discs of the spine. This is an invasive procedure, which involves the use of a special dye that's injected to the concerned disc, so that the disc becomes visible for further diagnosis. At times, when a patient complains of back pain, a discogram is used to find the actual disc or a series of disc that's damaged and is causing pain.
The Need for a Discogram:
Usually, when an x-ray is done, only the overall view of the bones and vertebrae can be seen. A discogram allows the doctor to check/view the actual disc that's causing the problem. During the procedure, your doctor will insert the needle into the disc space through the skin, so as to view the disc on a monitor, which is also called a "fluoroscope" in technical terms. The doctors will take the necessary steps to ensure that the needle is in the place as needed, and that's when a dye is injected, which appears to be white on the fluoroscope. Apart from viewing the disc, a discogram also allows doctors to find the actual source that's causing the back pain. The dye is injected in the space of the disc, so as to create pain to locate the source. The pain you feel will be the same as you feel normally. Additional diagnostic tests might be needed if a discogram doesn't show or identify the pain-causing disc. In most cases, it is used to find a degenerative disc.
Getting the Test Done:
A discogram is usually done as an outpatient procedure, and a pain doctor might be present as the radiologist does the test. Your doctor may have a few dos and don'ts for the procedure. For example, the patient should not eat solid food a night ahead of the test. Also, you should avoid coming in with jewelry. In most cases, IV is used during the procedure, and the radiologist will explain the procedure to you, along with some of the relevant factors that matter. If you have any questions, this is the time to ask the same. If there are any risks involved, he will also explain the same and get your signs on the consent and other relevant forms. Typically, a discogram takes somewhere between 30 to 45 minutes, and it can be uncomfortable for some people.
After The Test is Done:
You will be shifted to another room. Your pain doctor may wait and watch for an hour or so and may advice you to drink a lot of water, so as to get the dye flushed out of the body. Rest is important, but avoid taking painkillers if you have any pain. There are a few risks for patients who are allergic to dyes, so if you have a history of that, do mention the same.
In general, the pain doctor will oversee the procedure, or else, the radiologist will explain the findings on report or on phone as needed. Check online now to find more.

Tips to Make Your Family Healthy and Lively

Throughout our lives, we run so fast in achieving a better life that we forget to think what actually counts. I have seen a lot of obese people who are rich and have no control over their eating habits. They seem extremely depressed about it. Also, I found most of them alone so their depression increases even more. I won't be wrong if I say they have a lot of money but nowhere to spend it. What's the use of earning so much money when it can't make you happy?
I always prioritize because I firmly believe in an old age adage "health is wealth." I practice it myself and also motivate my family members to be healthy. It doesn't only benefit them physically, but also improves their psychological health and helps them in living a happy life.
Make a Habit of Exercising
A few years back, I used to exercise alone upon my curiosity to be healthy, but, now, I workout with my daughter and husband. When we get back home from work, we find out little princess busy in doing homework. After relaxing for a few hours, I play music and we exercise together. Recently, I motivated my husband to join a gym together, too, but we skipped the idea as it isn't a nice option for a seven-year-old kid. You can always go to a gym with your family if your kids are old enough.
If home exercising doesn't work and it bores your kid, take him to a playground and let him play with different types of commercial playground equipment. However, do take foam padding for playgrounds with you in order to ensure safety for them.
Encourage Healthy Eating
Parents have a hold over what should be cooked at home. If you make a habit of eating healthy food since the beginning of your kid's life, it will last throughout his life and he will lead an exemplary life. We can only do better when our health is good enough.
Cook healthy meals at home by using olive oil and veggies. Eat meat twice a week and avoid junk food. Kids love eating junks so you have to motivate them to eat healthily. Do not suppress their urge and allow them to have junk once in a week, but not more than that.
Cut Soda
Don't be surprised when I tell you an average can of soda is equal to ten tablespoons of sugar that are equal to 150 calories. Consuming a bottle of soda regularly results in gaining five pounds in a year. Replace soda with healthy drinks and fruits as you can see how hazardous it is to your health. Such healthy habits can be induced in children when they are young. Once they grow up, it becomes a hell of a challenge to fight their unhealthy habits.
Spend Quality Time Together
Even though it seems difficult to spend time with your family with a jam-packed routine, doing so will do wonders for both you and your kids. Make evening time your family time and go to walk and explore nature. Set goal to discover something new every week and go to a new place in your town. Believe it or not, fresh air does to your health what nothing else can do so go outside and avail the natural blessings you have in life.
Be Social
Kids learn more by observing their elders and peers. Therefore, set good examples for them so that they live a healthy life. The human beings are social animals and being alone ruins their personality and health. Therefore, socialize and let your kids hang out, too.

Moreover, sandalwood has a calming effect on the body as well as mind. It is very useful in the relief of fever and excessive sweating. It also good for treating burns and balancing the body after over-exposure to sunlight. Experts in natural medicine use it in the treatment of ulcers, acne, rashes, sores and so on. Its powder is used to smoothen the skin and it can be made into paste, lotion as well as soap for cleansing, calming and hydrating a skin that is aging or sensitive.
Sandalwood incense possess a wonderful scent which is ideal for clarifying the mind and awakening intelligence, hence, it is indispensable for meditation. In India, sandalwood was declared a royal tree in 1792 by the Sultan of Mysore and it is currently under the protection as well as ownership of the Indian government, even if it is grown on private land. The owner of the land only gets 75% of the proceeds in return for planting and taking care of the tree till it reaches maturity. Due to the increase in demand for perfumes, cosmetics and drugs containing sandalwood, it is a very essential commodity in India and even worldwide. It is illegal to export the wood out of India but other products made from it can be exported.

Top Benefits of Almonds You Must Know

Almonds are the oldest and most widely grown nuts in the world. Incorporating them into your diet will add value to your total wellness and this piece tends to expose the great benefits you can derive from doing this.
Almonds contain healthy fats that give your body the necessary energy and fuel it needs for daily activities. It is important to note that not all fat makes you fat. There are bad fats like trans fats (found in fried, fatty foods) which are not that good for the body. But there are good ones that are very essential for your survival and wellbeing.
Furthermore, eating almonds lowers your risk of having a heart attack. They help in reducing bad cholesterol levels and prevent dangerous blood clotting. They contain flavonoids which prevent the artery wall from damage and work with other vitamins to boost the cardiovascular system. Research shows that the consumption of nuts at least five times every week reduces the risk having a heart attack by 50%.
It has also been proved that almonds help in keeping the blood sugar levels regulated and prevent the insulin from spiking when they are taken after meals. They are a great snack for those who want to stay away from sugary, processed foods. They can also help you to reduce your craving for sugary snacks if you take them during the day.
In addition, almonds contain phosphorus which is very essential in building as well as maintaining strong bones and phosphorus also helps in strengthening your teeth. Almonds are also good for your brain. They contain vitamin E, riboflavin and L-carnitine which are nutrients that help in maintaining cognitive abilities through aging. They boost the overall brain activity and reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
It is generally agreed that diseases cannot thrive in an alkaline environment, hence, your body needs to be slightly more alkaline than acidic and maintaining this pH is very vital for feeling good and living free of illness. The good news here is that almonds are one of the only nuts that have an alkalizing effect on your body.
Almonds can be taken raw, soaked and in powdery form. Their oil is well-known in ayurvedic cooking because of its smoothness and soft flavour. Their flour is a great alternative for cooking as well as baking because it bakes more easily and has a great taste. Their milk can also be an alternative for you if you really need to stay away from animal milk.

The Many Health Benefits of Aloe Vera You Must Know

Aloe vera is one of the chief plants used in folk-medicine. Its healing benefits were recognized in the ancient Indian, Chinese, Greek and Roman civilizations. The Egyptians refer to it as "the plant of immortality" and it is usually among the funeral gifts buried with the pharaohs. In the traditional setting, aloe vera is used for healing wounds, relieving itching as well as swelling and it is known for its antibacterial as well as anti-inflammatory properties.
Aloe vera is a member of the lily family and is one to two feet tall. Its leaves are succulent, with a broad base, pointed tips and spines along the edges. Its leaves contain the healing gel which is 96% water, while the remaining 4% contains Vitamins A, B, C, and E; calcium; amino acids for protein building; and enzymes used in the digestive system. It has over 240 species but unfortunately, only four of them have medicinal values. The most potent of all the species is the aloe barbadensis and it is important to note that aloe vera, which is native to North Africa as well as Spain, is also grown in the hot regions of Asia, Europe and America.
The healing potential of aloe vera stems from its ability to prevent injury to the epithelial tissues and help in the healing of injured tissues. An epithelium is a layer of cells covering the body and our largest epithelium is the skin. Aloe is very beneficial in soothing many skin ailments like mild cuts, insect stings, bruises, eczema and so on. Research has also shown that it has antifungal as well as antibacterial properties and boosts blood flow to wounded areas. It also helps in the production of fibroblast (the skin cell responsible for wound healing) and collagen (the protein that controls the aging process of the skin as well as wrinkling).
Moreover, when aloe vera juice is taken internally, it aids digestion, helps control blood sugar, boosts energy production, promotes cardiovascular health and improves the immune system. It helps in clearing toxins from the digestive system and improves the functioning of the liver, kidneys as well as gall bladder. Its anti-inflammatory fatty acids alkalize the digestive juices and guide against acidity which causes indigestion. These fatty acids are not only beneficial to the stomach but also to the small intestine and colon. However, it is not advisable for pregnant women and children under five years of age to take aloe vera internally.

Raisins are dried grapes and they complement a great meal because of their medicinal value. When grapes are dehydrated to produce raisins, the nutrients become more concentrated and they become more beneficial to the body. Amazing Health Wonders Of The Neem Tree

Neem tree has been known as a wonder tree for ages due to its many benefits to mankind. It is commonly referred to as the friend of a villager because it can be used to cure common ailments like urinary disorders, diarrhea, fever, skin diseases, burns, inflammatory diseases and so on.
According to modern research, neem has a lot of verifiable attributes which make it an indispensable ingredient in modern manufacture of drugs and cosmetics. It has been discovered that it contains both alkaloids and liminoids which are very medicinal. For example, nimbin and nimbidin which are alkaloids found in neem have antiviral and anti-fungal properties. Also, azadirachtin which is a liminoid has been discovered to be 95% effective when used as an ingredient for the production of pesticides and insecticides. Another liminoid (gedunin) has been used in treating malaria in tropical countries and it is usually administered as a tea or herbal infusion.
Even though all parts of the neem tree are medicinal, its bark, leaf and oil are more beneficial. Its cool, bitter bark can be traditionally used to treat tiredness, fever, loss of appetite and kill worms. Due to its antiseptic and astringent properties, it can be used for healing wounds. It can also be used to traditionally clean the teeth by snapping off a twig of the tree and chewing it. The bark is also used for preventing bleeding gums and tooth decay.
The magical neem leaf works as an anti-fungal, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent to the skin. It takes care of common skin diseases like eczema, ringworm and acne. It is also used for treating wounds and if you can lay your hands on a neem leaf, crush into a paste, then apply it directly to the wound. The leaf is also good for removing toxins from the body, purifying the blood and eliminating toxic, free radicals. It nourishes the hair and has antibacterial as well as antiviral properties.
Neem oil is derived by crushing the seeds and it is very useful for treating skin problems just like the leaf. It is particularly effective in treating dandruff as well as eradicating head lice and it creates a purifying effect when used in aromatherapy. However, if you don't have a neem tree in your compound, you can still enjoy the benefits of its bark, leaf and oil. There are many herbal products having neem as one of the active ingredients and a visit to a nearby herbal shop or a little search online will do justice to that.

What You Should Know About Blood Clots In Your Leg Before You Visit The Doctor

Chances are that when you see some of the notes your doctor may write about your latest visit, you may not be able to read his or her handwriting, but you'll certainly understand little things like "blood clot in leg" or "blood clot lower extremity". You're not a doctor, but you know enough to understand that as soon as the notion of a blood clot is mentioned, things just got really serious.
It's at this juncture you need to do a few things. First, you need to be calm about what this all means and determine whether your anxiety is based on knowledge, understanding, or fear from misinformation. If you're like many of the patients doctors have these days, you've likely come up with your own diagnosis before you set foot in the office. In fact, medical experts have diligently tried to get the right information out into the ether because having the internet has made so many of us physicians in our own right.
Still, blood clots are worrisome, and given some of the numbers, especially those dealing with mortality, it makes sense that we might get a little panicked.
Before your next doctor's visit, here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to blood clots in your legs:
Understand The Risk Factors That Can Cause Clots - Knowing what can cause blood clots in your legs can help you make better choices. Some of the key risk factors include: obesity, immobility, and family history.
Symptoms Vary Depending On Where The Location of Clot - Though your focus is on your legs, clots travel, and treating them depends on where they travel. Eagerly detection is a key part of successful treatment.
Treatment Can Vary Depending on Your Health - Medical science is truly wonderful, but it can't do it alone. You need to be a part of the process, and this means being health-minded and doing what you can to help lower the risk for blood clot formation.
Blood Clots Are Preventable - Medical experts find that most people are under the impression that blood clots, in general, are inevitable when they are, in fact, preventable. Patients need to be active participants & not subscribe to the idea that sometimes things happen.
Potentially Deadly - If there were ever a reason to try to know what you can about clots and what you can do to help prevent them, it's that they can be fatal. This is why it's so important to have a good relationship with your doctor and maintain regular visits so that if there is an issue, you can develop a customized treatment plan.
No one would hold it against you if while your doctor was giving you a synopsis of your latest visit, all you heard was "blood clot in leg". For many, hearing this may be all they need to believe they are officially on the way out, so to speak. However, remember that your doctor is going to be especially crucial to your success facing any health issue that may arise. As such, do a little homework before your visit and in this way, you can avoid the feeling of having no control over your health by being an active participant in your treatment moving forward.

5 Reasons Why Every American Should Drink Matcha Tea for Health

Drink just one cup a day of matcha tea to increase energy, lose weight and protect your health.
Looking for a simple way to improve your energy and overall health? Just one cup a day of matcha green tea could be the answer.
Matcha is becoming increasingly well known in the western world for it's incredible health benefits. Matcha is a type of green tea. It is the whole tea leaf which has been ground into a powder. This tea is equal to 10 cups of standard green tea bags in terms of antioxidants. The reason is because using matcha, you ingest the whole tea leaf compared to just the brewed water. To drink matcha, you simply dissolve ½ a teaspoon into hot water which forms a delicious green tea.
The antioxidants in matcha help to increase energy, boost weight-loss and prevent disease. Read on for the top five reasons you should be drinking matcha green tea for your health.
Benefit #1: Matcha Increases Energy
Your energy level is so important because it underpins everything you do in life. If you are not energized you will not have the ability to achieve your goals or be your best self.
Matcha tea is a great source of sustainable long-lasting energy. Just one cup of matcha will boost your energy for 6-8 hours while also increasing your focus, memory, and concentration.
Why? Matcha contains a small amount of caffeine and the largest concentration of amino acid L-theanine. Together these substances will stimulate alertness and enhance the Alpha waves in the brain promoting deep concentration.
Benefit #2: Matcha Helps with Weight-Loss
Maintaining a healthy weight can be hard with all the unhealthy food and drink choices available. It's important to maximize the ability of your body to burn fat and metabolize food.
Matcha is not only a zero calorie, no-chemical and sugar-free healthy drink option but it also helps you lose weight by naturally boosting metabolism.
Research studies show that matcha helps raise the body's ability to burn fat by up to 45%. Matcha also helps regulate the hormone Leptin which makes you feel full and keeps hunger at bay. Additionally, the amino acids in matcha help prevent all the fat from your diet being absorbed in the body. And it's stress-busting properties help reduce stubborn midsection fat.
A daily cup of matcha can help you achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
Benefit #3: Matcha has Disease Fighting Antioxidants
Just one serving of matcha tea delivers half your daily antioxidant needs. Matcha has the highest antioxidant score of any naturally occurring product. It has 10 X the antioxidants of normal green tea leaves.
Antioxidants are produced by the body and absorbed from our diet. They are an important defense mechanism against disease. They remove harmful agents that are produced in our body through our everyday exposure to chemicals and toxins. Matcha has a particularly powerful antioxidant called EGCg. This antioxidant is known to help prevent the cellular DNA damage that causes cells to rapidly multiply which can lead to cancer forming and spreading.
Drinking matcha can help your body stay healthy and can change the odds when it comes to diseases.
Benefit #4: Matcha Supports the Immune System & Reduces Inflammation
Matcha tea is a huge support to your body's immune system and can help reduce inflammation.
The antioxidants in matcha increase your body's production of T-Cells which fight pathogens and reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals in the body.
Furthermore, matcha green tea contains high levels of both flavonoids and antioxidants which form a powerful antibacterial defense force. The flavonoids eliminate bad breath, kill off bacteria from viruses/infections and can soothe a sore throat.
Stay healthy throughout the year and fight away the common colds with a daily cup of matcha.
Benefit #5: Matcha Helps Prevent Heart Disease
In 2017 heart disease was the leading cause of death for Americans. While this is concerning, the good news is that heart disease is preventable.
One thing everyone can do is to manage their cholesterol levels. Research studies have shown that drinking green tea daily has a positive impact on lowering bad cholesterol while keeping good cholesterol untouched. And as one cup of matcha green tea is the equivalent to 10 cups of standard green tea in terms of antioxidants, an easy way to manage cholesterol levels is by drinking just one matcha a day.
Green tea has also been linked to helping treat high blood pressure as it inhibits the chemical ACE being secreted by the kidneys. This chemical is one of the main causes of high blood pressure.
Swapping one drink a day to matcha can help protect your heart and health.
In Summary;
If you're looking to protect your health easily, then make a simple swap and start drinking matcha green tea. It is important to buy high-quality matcha so that you receive the full health benefits. High-quality matcha is from Japan, is a premium grade or higher and is usually a deep, vibrant green and non-bitter in flavor.

Live a Healthy Lifestyle Easily

Good health is the gift of God. In this busy life, it is very difficult to maintain a good and healthy lifestyle. Which is the core of attaining the good health. There are a few things that can make your lifestyle a healthier lifestyle, hence helping you to get a good health. These include:
Diet / Nutrition
The very first and the most important thing in maintaining a good health is your diet. In general, dieting is considered as the eating of some specified foods. If you are not maintaining your diet no matter what exercise you do or what sport you play, you can't have good health. Diet not only includes healthy eating but keeping it regular and having your meals at a specific time is an essential part of dieting and good nutrition.
Good nutrition includes intake of enough calories required by the body. This can be done by maintaining a moderate amount of essentials like proteins, carbohydrates, fats and liquid calories as well. Water plays a very important role in maintaining your shape (shape of your body). Besides that, water helps in cleansing your skin as well. Depending on the weather a normal human body requires at least 8 glasses of water. This required amount increases in the area where it is hotter.
Sleeping
Along with nutrition, sleep is also very important to have a good health. Good sleep can benefit your mind, heart, weight etc. It is the part of a good and healthier lifestyle which many of us ignore. If you are not having a good sleep you can face many issues like the disturbance in mood, having dark circle around your eyes (under-eye circles). It is highly recommended to have 6-8 hours' sleep during 24 hours of the day.
A good sleep can be helpful in:
  • Maintaining good weight.
  • Having sharp attention.
  • Improving your memory.
  • Low stress
Exercise
Exercise is also an essential part of your healthy lifestyle. Exercise helps you a lot in maintaining your weight, keeping your body in shape. Exercise includes playing any game which includes physical activity. The best exercise anyone can do is the morning walk or jogging / running in the morning. Going to the gym for muscle building can help you get six pack abs. Regular exercise can help you strengthen your body to fight against different diseases.
At the end we can say that good eating habits, having enough sleep and regular exercise collectively lead to a healthier lifestyle.

What Children Teach Us About Health

Some of you reading this may be enjoying your pinnacle years of health. Others may be struggling with a difficult diagnosis. Still others may feel trapped in a cycle of bad habits. Regardless where you are, one of the key points of living with health is living each moment to the fullest. It is pivotal that we take the moment in front of us, and live that moment with hope. Sometimes our best intentions of planning ahead for our health can rob of us of the happiness of our health TODAY. As a healthcare provider, I wanted to remind us all of some key concepts from the science of health, that I have learned time and again from caring for children:
Stop and appreciate each breath, regardless of your future goals.
Trust others more freely. Let yourself be filled with hope by embracing a child like faith in LOVE and LIFE.
Don't worry about tomorrow. Plan for tomorrow's health, but, appreciate what you have now.
Children are notorious for embracing the moment, regardless of what lies ahead. They are notorious for trusting implicitly. That must be why there are so many illustrations of embracing child like faith. The evidence is clear that strength in the moment comes from a mental agility and mindfulness of the present. Trust and hope in the moment are essential to health. Today's tip reminders are inspired by a young Piraha boy I cared for in the Amazon jungles of Brazil:
I had been assigned to work with a community health group, screening for malaria in rural areas of northwestern Brazil. One of our tasks was to test for malaria, and treat the cases we found. I expected to be treating bedridden patients, with high fevers, depleted from all energy. Instead what I found were many children who were playing soccer in the fields, while testing positive for malaria! In attempt to treat each individual case, I called a young boy, Joao, into the clinic. His blood level of malaria was high, but, not his energy or zeal for life. He was about 7 years old, and his frailness hid behind his intense energy. I told his mom he had malaria, and that he would need to take the medicine to treat it for a few days. As we checked his temperature, his high fever was a surprise to me. He was so energetic, and seemed to face such a difficult disease without a care in the world! I can even remember him begging his mother to let him finish his game of soccer before he started the malaria medication!. He lived moment by moment, and it was obvious he had grown accustomed to appreciating whatever opportunity life gave him, with or without malaria.

How Drinking Water Makes You Healthier

Scientists have disputed if water has any effect on weight loss, but almost 59% of adults in the US believe it does, and these are some of the reasons why. For those looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, why not try water to help you lose weight? Here are a few reasons why you need to think of water as an assistant in weight loss.
1. Keep hydrated, eat less
When you are dehydrated you tend to eat more. This is because we want to eat more than we want to drink water. Whenever you're hungry, you grab food the minute the signal is sent but we tend to ignore our thirst signal until it becomes unbearable. Almost 75% of us are dehydrated at any one time. So try to take some water when you find yourself next time you're craving food in between meals.
TIP: Drink water (1 glass) about half an hour before a meal, but not closer. Drinking too close to the meal dilutes your stomach acid.
2. Reduce calories
Drinking water regularly prevents you from drinking high calorie drinks that will increase your weight. Instead of water we tend to replace it with milk flavoured coffee, tea, fruit juices, and soft drinks. These drinks are high in calories so switching to water you of course consume less calories.
3. Increased energy
Even being a little dehydrated can cause you to lose energy and be sluggish and we tend to go for high calorie snacks to motivate us. Drinking water helps to boost energy and you will want to use it for exercise which helps to reduce your weight and you will consume less calories.
4. Boost your metabolism
Drinking more water (especially cold water) helps to increase the energy you expend even while at rest - up to 400 kilojoules for every two liters of water you drink.
TIP: When you're tired of plain old water, add some lemon for flavor, or a bit of fruit juice (10%).
5. Healthy Joints
Sometimes we feel like our joints need some lubrication, and water helps to do this. Water is a main component of synovial fluid that is found in the joints, and helps to reduce friction and protect your joints from injury.
TIP: Eat foods with high water concentration. Grapefruit contains 91% water. Watermelon and strawberries contain 92% water. Cucumber and lettuce contain 96% water.
6. Liver functions
Your liver helps to remove waste from your body and to metabolize fat. Drinking water regularly helps the liver to carry out its functions unhindered.
7. Body health consciousness
Humans are creatures of habit and carrying a water bottle everyday can help you to take better care of your body as you set your goal to drink at least two liters of water everyday. You will start to slowly become conscious of you food intake and exercises.
TIP: When you have a headache don't always rush to get an aspirin, take some water instead and you might find that headache was just your body telling you to take some water.
8. Muscle build up
We sometimes find our muscles aren't as strong as they look and this is because dehydration causes loss of muscle strength and slow muscle response. Staying hydrated before and after doing exercise helps with muscle growth and response.
TIP: Being thirsty means you are dehydrated. Try to drink water at regular intervals, and don't wait to get thirsty.
We are always advised to drink 2 liters of water everyday (equivalent to eight glasses of water). This, however, is completely dependent on the individual. For example, people who are active and sweat a lot may need more water than those who are not as active. Don't overdo your consumption, as it can cause water toxicity, which can lead to death. Keep to the safe threshold of two liters of water (67 ounces).
Don't always go for the high energy foods or candy to boost you in a day, as they help only to increase your weight and make you lose the energy you need shortly after. Drinking water as you should will help to keep you healthy, as your body will get rid of waste efficiently and you will never be at a loss of energy when you need some to go through the day.

Body Basics: Alimentary Canal - How the Digestive System Works

Food is the fuel of the body. But before it can be of any use, it must be properly processed. The body's food processing plant is the alimentary canal, a muscular tube about 10 m (33ft) long which starts at the mouth and ends at the anus.
When food is put in the mouth, it is tested for taste and temperature by the tongue. Solid food is bitten off by the front teeth (incisors), and then chewed by the back teeth or molars. Even before the food is tasted, and during chewing, saliva pours into the mouth from salivary glands near the lower jaw.
Saliva moistens food, and the enzymes it contains start digestion. By the time it is ready to be swallowed; the original mouthful has been transformed into a soft ball, called a bolus, and warmed or cooled to the right temperature.
Though quick, this stage is in fact quite complex. First the tongue pushes the bolus of food up against the roof of the mouth and into the muscle-lined cavity at the back of the mouth: the pharynx. Once food is in the pharynx, several activities take place within the space of a couple of seconds to prevent swallowing from interfering with breathing.
From the pharynx, the bolus now passes into the oesophagus, or gullet, the tube joining the mouth to the stomach. The bolus does not just fall down the oesophagus because of gravity but is pushed along by waves of muscle action called peristalsis.
Except during eating, the oesophagus is kept closed by a ring of muscles called the cardiac sphincter which prevents the highly acid contents of the stomach from being regurgitated into the oesophagus. As a bolus of food passes down the oesophagus, the sphincter relaxes to open the pathway into the stomach.
The stomach is a collapsible muscular bag designed to store food (so that it is not usually necessary to eat small meals all day long), to mix food with various digestive juices, then to release it slowly into the intestine.
Food is mixed as the stomach wall contracts and relaxes and is moved along by waves of peristalsis. By the time it has spent two to six hours being processed in the stomach, the partially digested food has been converted by various chemicals to a liquid called chyme.
The stomach exit is guarded by a muscle known as the pyloric sphincter. As the waves of peristalsis push chyme through the stomach, the sphincter lets out chyme in small amounts into the small intestine.
The small intestine is in fact the longest section of the alimentary canal, measuring 20ft (6m) and getting its name not from its length but its width - about 1 ½ in. (4cm). The largest part of the digestive process takes place in the small intestine, through the action of digestive juices made not only by the intestine itself, but by the liver (bile) and the pancreas (pancreatic secretions).
As waves of peristalsis move chime along the small intestine, it is given another thorough mixing. When more food enters the stomach, a valve at the end of the small intestine opens and chyme passes into the large intestine, a tube about 3ft (1.5m) long and an average 7.5 cm (3 in.) in diameter.
In the large intestine, water is absorbed into the blood from the liquid remains of digestion. By the time these remains reach the rectum, they are in the form of solid faeces. Rather than the continuous contractions of peristalsis, the progressively more solid remains are moved along by giant propulsions that take place only a few times a day.
Finally, faeces enter the anal canal, which is kept closed by the last sphincter in the alimentary canal. In infancy, the sphincter opens automatically when the anal canal is full. But as the nervous system matures, we learn to override the automatic signals.
The alimentary canal processes approximately 35 tons of food during the course of an average life of 70 years. No wonder, then, that it sometimes goes wrong. Some ills of the alimentary canal are so common they have become household words - ulcers, appendicitis, constipation, diarrhoea and heartburn, to name a few. While some are unavoidable, there are ways to keep the digestive system healthy.
  • Do not eat (or feed children) too much. This puts a strain on the digestion and can create a weight problem. In infants it can lead to vomiting and regurgitation.
  • Chew your food properly before swallowing. The digestion of carbohydrates starts in the mouth with ptyalin, an enzyme in saliva.
  • Include sufficient roughage in your diet - fruit with the skin on, lightly cooked vegetables, bran with your breakfast cereal. Dietary fibre cannot be digested by the alimentary canal but stimulates the passage of food through the large intestine, helping to prevent constipation and perhaps some intestinal diseases as well.
  • Avoid any foods you know you or your family react to badly.
  • Minimize stress. This increases the acid secretion of the stomach and the muscular action of the whole system, causing food to be pushed along too fast so that it is not properly digested.
  • Stop smoking, cut down, because, like stress, it stimulates acid secretion.
