The Top Four Types of Medical Transportation for Any Patient

Each day, people need assistance. Medical transportation services work to get you to the places you need to go in order to receive treatment from doctors and nurses. These trained professionals run the gambit between life and death. Which form of transit is the best for your specific needs?
Ambulance
The most common form of medical transportation is the ambulance. Everyone sees them around on a regular basis. Not only are they common within the United States, but they are also a familiar sight in countries all around the world. This mode takes patients from the scene to the hospital or between hospitals.
Air MedEvac
If you need to be at a hospital in a hurry due to the nature of your injuries, or if you need to be transferred to a center hundreds of miles away, you will take a helicopter. Much like an ambulance, this special transport helps to save lives. The team of paramedics on board work tirelessly to ensure that their patients are comfortable and receive as much care as possible. It is their job to ensure necessary treatment is provided at the other end of the journey.
Commercial Flights
In some instances, a commercial airline becomes a medical transportation service. This happens when the service grants free tickets to those who must travel hundreds or thousands of miles in order to obtain medical care. In order to get a free ticket, you or the caregiver must apply for the grant; not everyone is eligible for this service. The grants are only given to hospitals, which are operated as non-profits. The patient and his or her caregiver must show that there is no way they could afford the transportation without the assistance. The hospitals are granted tickets, and they are the ones that determine who is eligible for the travel help. The grant system is welcomed by many hospitals and other charitable organizations that believe it is the best way to offer medical help to those who otherwise would not be able to receive it.
Non-emergency Transport
Most medical transportation is used as a means to get patients to a hospital in the quickest way possible. However, not everyone needs urgent care. Those who need to get to appointments at doctor's offices or hospitals may still need assistance getting there. Thankfully, there are services in place to assist patients with conditions that restrict them from getting there themselves. These groups can be non-profit or commercial. They work like a taxi service, picking the patient up at their door and dropping them off at their appointment. This type of service frees up emergency services like ambulances for those who really need them.
In some cases, the different types of medical transportation work in concert with one another to provide lifesaving services for patients.

Services Provided at a Walk-In Clinic

Getting a doctor's appointment can be difficult, especially if you are in a hurry. There are times when an illness hits after regular clinic hours and you simply cannot wait until the next business day. While going to the emergency room is an option, if you do not have a true emergency you could wait for hours. Choosing to go to a walk-in clinic may get you out faster. Stand-alone sites often have a team of physicians managing the staff. Centers run at retail outlets or malls usually have a nurse practitioner at the helm. Here are some of the services provided by local centers.
Vaccinations
If you are not ill and just need a vaccination, you could benefit from skipping the doctor's office completely. Many retail pharmacies now offer onsite walk-in clinics that can administer vaccines such as those for flu or shingles. You can get in and out in less than twenty minutes and avoid the hassle of dealing with nurses and doctors just to get your yearly preventative vaccination.
Evaluation of Illness
During cold and flu season, getting in to see your regular physician can be difficult because everyone else is suffering from similar symptoms. By going to a walk-in clinic, you can be evaluated to see if you are suffering from a cold or the flu. Depending on what your ailment is, the physician on duty can prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms and help you get well sooner.
In addition to testing for common respiratory illnesses, these centers also test and treat stomach ailments that present with diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. They also evaluate joint pain, oral ailments, and even eye problems.
Minor Injuries
A hospital emergency room staff should evaluate severe injuries. However, minor injuries such as non-life-threatening cuts, bumps, and burns are treatable at a walk-in clinic. If you are uncertain about whether or not a bone is broken, stand-alone centers are equipped with x-ray testing equipment.
Other injuries that are easily treated at one of these centers include sprains and strains, sunburn, abrasions, splinter removal, and animal bites. Those with small children who may have put items in their ears or up their noses can also have these items removed without a trip to the emergency room.
While urgent care centers can be a great alternative to emergency rooms for minor injuries, centers located within retail outlets and malls are not the places to be seen for major injuries or illnesses. These sites are often not equipped with all the items needed to verify a serious problem.
Other Health Care Needs
Many walk-in clinic practitioners are working to make their center more like a traditional doctor's office in that they may require an appointment for anything more than minor injuries or common seasonal illnesses. These appointments do not have to be made days in advance. Most will let you walk into the clinic and set an appointment at that time.
Those who do offer appointments in addition to their walk-in services tout that it reduces wait times for their patients.

Orthopedics Team: The Different Players Needed for Patient Care

Diseases and injuries affecting the ligaments, nerves, tendons, joints, and bones receive treatment from orthopedics specialists. Careers in this field include more than just the doctors. Each person in this team plays a vital role in patient care.
Orthopedic Nurse
Nurses who take care of people with musculoskeletal diseases fall under the umbrella of orthopedics. These skilled nurses may assist in the operating room or could work a special ward in the hospital. While many work with patients who have had joint replacement surgery or corrective procedures for broken bones, they also help patients suffering from arthritis. As with other nursing fields, these nurses may be a registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). Registered nurses go to school for two to four years to obtain their associate's or bachelor's degree. On the other hand, LPNs only go to school for about one year in order to obtain their certificate.
Advance Practice Nurses
In addition to having LPNs and RNs on the team, some doctors employ advanced practice nurses. These nurses have completed either their master degree or earned their doctorate in the nursing field. Due to their extensive education and experience, advanced practice nurses, also known as Nurse Practitioners, are able to perform doctor-like tasks. They are capable of ordering lab tests and x-rays, diagnosing injuries and diseases and can prescribe medication. While these nurses may perform direct patient care, they often manage a healthcare for a group of patients just like a physician. Nurse practitioners must be licensed and, in some states, certified in order to work in this field.
Surgeons
At the center of most teams is the surgeon. These doctors spend about half their time in the operating room. Despite the amount of time spent in operation, these doctors also use physical, medical, and rehabilitative methods to treat their patients. Doctors specializing in orthopedics complete the traditional medical track of an undergraduate degree, medical school, and residency. After their residency, they may need to spend several years as a general surgeon before moving into an orthopedic practice. As with all physicians, these specialists are required to obtain a license and certification for their state.
Technologist
All physicians need assistants while they are in the operating room or in their office. While nurses do the bulk of the assisting, there are technologists who play a role in patient care. These techs work with patients by managing those who are in traction, assisting during operations, and applying or removing casts. Unlike physicians or nurses, these skilled workers are not required to have a license or certification. However, most offices will not employ someone as a technologist unless they have received an associate degree or certificate in the field. This ensures that the worker has had some training and education.
A team of orthopedics specialists work together to care for patients suffering from musculoskeletal ailments. Due to the unique job each person performs, it is difficult for a team to operate without one of the members.

Diagnostic Health Camps for Rural India

It is necessary to keep in good health which the lower strata of society finds difficult owing to their financial problems. Therefore, free diagnostic health camps are being organised frequently in India to conduct general medical check-ups and for heart, paediatric, ophthalmic, skin, ENT, disease and women health examination. There are many government and voluntary organisations that come to the rescue of community members by putting therapeutic camps, health check-ups for diabetes, heart diseases and hypertension.
Immunization Against Diseases
They also arrange for preventive vaccination for immunization against Typhoid fever, Polio and Hepatitis B. They want to increase their outreach in areas which have very less of health infrastructure. The focus is more on taking a follow-up on cases at regular intervals of time. These healthcare programmes help in understanding the basic health related problems along with free distribution of medicines.
Objectives to Fulfil
The main objectives behind rolling out such projects is better reproductive health and child care, awareness about communicable diseases, promote good nutrition in women and children. The non-profit organisations also want to improve personal hygiene and sanitation, promote safe water drinking, capacity building against maternal and infant mortality and build awareness on HIV/AIDS and TB among the young, children, poor and elderly. The intervention is of more help if implemented in rural areas where the level of knowledge and participation is comparatively lower than the urban cities.
Free Check-Up and Aid
Other people can also lend a helping hand in organizing diagnostic health camps in rural areas and contribute to the welfare of society. Camps of such nature are generally put up in urban and rural slums so that the needy can easily avail the health services extended to them. Organisations depute consultants from different disciplines inside these camps along with volunteers who facilitate their smooth functioning. Here, it is seen that the minor concerns are addressed at the local level itself but referrals are made for treatment of the major problems.
Inside a Diagnostic Health Camps
For better understanding, an example of a rural health camp conducted at WAVE City in Delhi NCR with support from the Indo-German Hospital. About 600 families where reached out this way and the camp treated people suffering from skin, anaemia, respiratory and gynaecological problems. Here, villagers turned up in large numbers to receive free medical consultation and aids. You can see several other customized health camps put up in the surrounding areas to offer facilities of similar nature. They provide preventive, curative, referral, promotive and comprehensive health services to numerous people living in the selected intervention areas. The duration of these check-up facilities ranges from 1-15 days a month with frequencies between a month to an entire year.

Top 4 Considerations When Choosing a Chiropractic Office

I get many new patients in my chiropractic office who have been suffering or feeling like they have been slowly getting worse for many years with various ailments. When I ask them what they have tried to do to overcome this, I find out that they have ALL tried several things which resulted in limited improvement. My next question is what was your diagnosis when you sought the help of the practitioner that wasn't able to help you? Blank stare. This is a problem - if you cannot be shown with certainty what the cause of your problem is and understand it please seek the help of someone who can. Without finding the cause, it is impossible to have a solution.
You have to be your own health advocate because no one cares more about your health than you do, so knowing the cause (diagnosis) of your problem should be paramount before agreeing to any type of potential solution.
When a patient of mine is relocating and is choosing a new chiropractic office in their new town or city, these are the questions I tell them to ask before going:
1) Will there be objective testing (thermography and x-ray) done at your initial visit and periodically throughout your care so that you can see your results? Will there be a recovery plan laid out in order to get you to where you want to be?
2) Does the office specialize in one or two things? You want someone who is proficient at adjusting if you are looking for spinal correction and it should be the only focus. An office that throws everything (multiple therapies) at you in hopes something works is hoping and guessing - there should be no guessing.
3) Does the doctor advocate some active participation in your care - e.g. provides you with home rehab instructions? Maximum recovery in the shortest amount of time requires that you to do a little bit of work in your recovery.
4) Does the office seem to be up to date? Look around the office and see if there appears to be investment in the equipment, office space, and the team of people who work there.
Getting the answers to these questions that satisfy you, is the most important thing when trying to find the right solution to your problem. Today, with the technology available, there need not be any guessing in your health. Seek a chiropractic office that fits with your goals and be confident once you have considered these questions above. Your recovery and quality of life depends on it.

Are Corporations Trying To Kill Us All?

Seventy percent of the food you buy in the grocery store is processed. Processed food has been linked to cancer in various studies. Of course, correlation does not mean causation. Meaning that eating processed food may be because people are too lazy to cook, and they are getting cancer from something else.
How about this. In insurance, there is something called "Moral Hazard." This means when we think we are going to be protected from some bad outcome, we actually behave in ways that will increase the likelihood of that outcome.
In cities where they have changed the laws to force people to wear seat belts, for example, people actually drive a little bit more dangerously. There are more accidents. Scientists believe that since people are buckled up, they feel safer, and they don't feel they need to be more careful.
How about this. They've shown studies that indicate in cities where access to doctors is increased, people live less healthy. Meaning they subconsciously know that since they have access to a doctor, they don't need to be as careful with how they live their lives.
What about this. We've got politicians on TV all the time convincing us we have a "right" to health care. That may be true, but if we believe that health care is our right, we will be less likely to take care of ourselves.
Wait, it gets worse. Every night we watch TV. Lulled into an open state of hypnosis. And guess what we see? Lots of advertisements, you guessed it. And guess who pays for seventy percent of advertising on TV? Drug companies. Big billion dollar pharmaceutical companies that convince us that every problem we have can be solved by taking some kind of pill.
Let's put it all together. We eat mostly processed food that has been linked to cancer. We are being hypnotized by our TV's and our politicians that it's not our job to keep ourselves healthy. Which means we are being brainwashed by big corporations into being as unhealthy as possible. Why is this? Are they trying to kill us, or just squeeze every single dollar they can out of us before we die an early death?
Either way, things aren't good if you are expecting other people, like the government to take care of you.
Nobody really cares about you like you do, so start taking better care of yourself!

Guide To Medical Tape

When you are standing in a pharmacy aisle or looking at an online medical supply store, it is very easy to be overwhelmed with the choices for medical tape. This will hopefully help you understand what 3M means by Medipore, Transpore, Microfoam, etc. 3M makes high quality medical and surgical tape. More than likely, if you were in the hospital you have seen these products. All items listed in this article are hypoallergenic. They are not all latex-free.
Blenderm: Waterproof clear plastic, it is a flexible, occlusive tape that helps protect wounds from external fluids and from becoming contaminated. It is not listed as latex-free.
Durapore: Silk-like strong backing, with high adhesion to dry skin. This is strong and conforms to the unique shapes of the body as well as bulky dressings. Can be used with heavier tubing and small splints. It is latex-free.
Medipore: Soft cloth surgical tape, this is a breathable, gentle and conformable product that comes in easy tear, perforated rolls. Used for larger, bulky dressings where the skin may stretch and can be used for repeated use because it is so gentle. This is not listed as latex-free.
Microfoam Foam Tape: Water resistant foam product that stretches in all directions. Works well for compression applications and securing dressings in challenging areas. Highly conformable closed cell tape. It is latex-free.
Micropore Paper Tape: Breathable and gentle with a rayon backing. This is a general dressing tape that works great for at-risk and fragile skin. It can be repeated on the same area of skin. It is latex-free.
Transpore Plastic Tape: Clear with easy bi-directional tear. It is perforated polyethylene film that very easily tears into very thin strips. Great for securing tubing. It is not latex-free.
Tips for making the best use of medical tape:
Touch the sticky part as little as possible. When you place the it down, apply even and gentle pressure to the top to ensure complete contact with the skin. Gentle but firm strokes along the entire strip of tape will help the tape come into complete contact with the skin. This helps keep the tape edges from rolling or losing adhesion. Most adhesives stick to clean, dry surfaces better so try to minimize moist conditions as much as possible. Be careful when choosing soaps and lotions, a lot of them will prevent tape from sticking because of the oils and emollients that are used. If the adhesive is bothering your skin, you can use a skin prep like 3M Cavilon barrier film. Always allow the film to dry completely before applying the medical tape. Remember, your skin should be healthy and tape should not be making it less healthy. Always consult your medical team if you are concerned for any part of your health.

Why You Need The Flu Shot This Season

The flu shot will help protect you from this virus during the season. Not only will it keep you healthy and get you through the whole year but it is also a good idea to get yourself vaccinated if you are around children and elderly people. If you fall ill, there is a big chance that people around you fall ill too and this could get dangerous for those who do not have a good immune system.
Those Who Are At Risk
Children and senior citizens suffering from various diseases related to the lungs or heart and smokers are often most at risk. A simple case of flu could lead to ear infections, bronchitis and even pneumonia in these people. In fact, those over the age of 65 should also consider taking the pneumonia vaccine during this season.
Even though a healthy individual may only suffer from this virus for a few days and then get back to routine, one dose a year will not do you any harm and it could help protect the people around you. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or any of the ingredients present in it should avoid taking it. Children below the age of 6 months should also not be given the dose.
When to Get the Shot
It takes about two weeks after you get the injection for the antibodies to build up in your system. This means that you should ideally get vaccinated as soon as possible. Waiting a little longer will only increase the chances of the virus entering your body before the antibodies have taken effect. The shot will then not be able to fight off the flu. However, you should also remember that it is never too late to get the vaccine. Even if you take it in February, it could still protect you from getting ill in March. A few minutes to get yourself protected will help you control the sick days at the office and also cut down on the insurance costs.
Ways You can Get the Flu Shot
If you are scared of needles, it shouldn't prevent you from getting the flu shot this year. Small children have the option of nasal spray flu vaccine so that they do not feel any pain at all while being given the dose. However, this spray is not recommended for women who are pregnant. Adults also have the option of intradermal flu vaccine. The fine needle used to give this dose only penetrates the skin so you will not feel any pain. Those suffering from an egg allergy can also get a cell-based vaccine.

5 Ways To Get You Motivated About A Healthy Lifestyle

It's that time of the year when people vow to make changes. Maybe it's time to quit smoking, learn another language or take that kickboxing class you've been putting off all of last year. Regardless of what it is, you want to improve yourself in one way or another. One of the most common resolutions that people make is to get in better shape. It's no coincidence that January is the month when gyms rack up the most enrollments. How many of these new members will you see still see there in April? If you really want to make changes, do it in a way that will set you up for long term success. Don't flip a switch and decide that you're all of a sudden a fitness enthusiast. That's a recipe for failure. Here are five ways that you can make your new venture a successful one.
Create a Plan
Plan your day from beginning to end. From the time you wake up to the time you plan to retire for the night. Plan the day and times for laundry, grocery shopping and so on. Once you've done that, pick three days that you cleared your schedule to exercise for 45 minutes. It can be at home or at a gym so plan commute time accordingly. If waking up early before work is your best option, plan to get to bed earlier so you can wake up ready to go. If you plan to go after work, bring a gym bag to work so that you don't have to stop home afterwards. Once you consistently go three times a week, try adding a fourth day to the mix.
Make Gradual Changes
Bad habits didn't develop overnight and they can't be undone in that manner either. These toxins that we rely on have addictive properties that are hard to shake. The probability of quitting smoking by going from three packs a day to none at all is highly unlikely. Just like with everything else, it takes time and a consistent effort. The same goes with eating sugars, drinking coffee and a sedentary lifestyle. Take small steps in the right direction. Start with reducing the amounts of sugars you eat. Make a goal every week to eat less and less sugar. From drinks to foods, gradually phase them out of your diet. While doing this, try to sneak some exercise into your routine. If three times a week seems extreme, try two times, maybe for thirty minutes to start. Then lengthen your workouts and up your weekly visits as you get more accustomed to that lifestyle.
Set Goals For Yourself
Set goals to eliminate bad foods from your diet, to get to the gym and to improve your current fitness level. Allow yourself 50 grams (if you consume more than that) of sugar for the week and 2 gym visits. Practice pushups until failure. If you can do 6 repetitions at the moment, set a goal for to reach 10 repetitions in three weeks for example. Keep setting new challenges and new goals that will build on your previous results. Not only will it keep you more engaged in your workouts, it will let you track your progress.
Challenge Friends
You held a plank for one minute for your first time. You're excited, now challenge a friend or coworker to do the same. You did it, now see how long it takes them to do it. Maybe a weight loss challenge, who can do the most pushups or hold the longest plank. The more people engaged, the easier it becomes. You may even find a gym partner, which is the best way to push yourself through those rough days that you probably wouldn't make it. You can't let your gym partner go alone, they need you!
Don't Listen To Bad Advice
If you seek advice or nutrition counseling, go to a professional and disregard what anyone else has to say. Follow their advice and see where it leads you over a three month period. Don't give up after a week because you aren't seeing results. Only take advice from one person at a time. If you hired a personal trainer or dietician, take their advice and their advice only. The more people you ask for advice, the more contradictory information you will receive. Everyone has their own opinion or some silly fad diet that worked for them or how to build muscle or lose weight. Don't look for shortcuts or a quick and easy fix because there aren't any. Pace yourself throughout the journey and enjoy each step you take.

Maintain Your Health for a Long Period of Time

Health can be defined as something that is taken for granted many times. Whenever we start losing health it can turn out to be hard to believe that we spent a very long period of time not valuing it at all. Thus in order to ensure that you stay as healthy as possible for a very long period of time, we have outlined a small guide for your understanding. These also detail your mental, physical and emotional health.
A healthy diet is important
To maintain a good health, obviously a healthy diet is very important. This healthy diet should be comprised of nutrients, color and vitamins. Also the easiest way to do this is through piling on vegetables and fruits. They are dense in nutrients but they are not dense calorically. This means that you can eat a lot of them without actually affecting your healthy negatively.
Drink enough water
In case you are looking for a great miracle on earth, water is the closest that you can probably get. You must stay hydrated as it can be beneficial to your skin, hair and nails. Apart from such simple things, you will obviously be able to lose a significant amount of weight.
Exercise regularly
Yes it is important to exercise from time to time in order to maintain your health. There is obviously no way around this. To stay healthy it is important to stay active. If you are not using your muscles, you will obviously lose them and the same goes for your brain. Your body craves for exercise. There is nothing like exercise for your body.
Drink alcohol in moderation
This is a very important decision you must take as soon as possible. Drinking in moderation can help you to avoid making stupid decisions and the most important it affects your health positively. By limit we mean that you 2 a day for men and 1 a day for women.
Quit smoking
Smoking is no way going to do your health any favors. It can also take out a chunk off your budget or money. There are thousands of reasons for you to quit smoking and many of those are the diseases that it can cause in a short span of time. No doubt it is called as a slow poison.
Regular check ups
Regular checkups can help you to stay healthy. This is because these checkups are done in order for you to no more about your health. Assign yourself a doctor and visit him or her on a regular basis.

Criteria for Selecting The Top Hospital For Your Treatment

Having enough time for evaluation you are in a place where you can select the top hospital for your treatment and make sure that you get quality services throughout your stay too.
Here's how you go about it:
Firstly get a master list of all the hospitals. Make sure that you eliminate the ones that do not provide services for the type of treatment you want. If you need a cardiac surgery, some of the smaller hospitals may not have the right facilities to provide you with the best outcomes.
After that's done, make a short list of the one's that you see as the top hospitals that have a reputation of providing great services for the procedure you need to undergo.
Read reviews
Make sure that you read the reviews of these hospitals and check out the ratings as rated by well-known rating agencies. Well, check out the patient reviews too. Good sources for checking out-patient reviews are social media sites and the hospital's websites. Patient experiences with the hospital matter whether good or bad.
But make sure that you do not base your decision solely on the reviews you read. Those are meant to be just for the sake of information. Look beyond these reviews and try to understand the overall facilities provided by the hospital.
Expertise, Experience and Support Staff
Check out the doctors and their expertise. Also check out the doctor's experience in the type of procedure you wish to undergo. Checking out the success rate is important too.
Other important things to check are the support staff. It is a known fact that the hospital does not run only with surgeons and doctors. You need administrative staff, nurses and other support staff for proper functioning of the hospital.
Visit the hospital to check out the support staff and the overall functioning of the hospital. There should be ample support and no patient should feel the delay in attending when the support staff is called for.
The administration staff should also be efficient and should not create unnecessary delays at the time of admission or during exit.
Selecting the top hospital not only decides the quality of treatment you get, it also defines your overall experience with the hospital stay. The more comfortable you are the more confident you will be of your choice of hospital for the surgery you intend to undergo.
Lastly, check the hospital for the equipment used. Are they well equipped for the procedure that you wish to undergo? Do they have enough tools and machinery or do they have enough accommodation for the number of patients admitted per day? You will need to check all these minor aspects to ensure that the hospital you choose is best suited for your treatment.

How Is a Kidney Transplant Performed?

The blood is kept clean and healthy. When kidneys fail to function normally the impact is seen on various other parts of the body too. The harmful wastes keep building up and your blood pressure may rise. The excess fluid is retained and the body is not capable of making red blood cells.
Under these circumstances, kidney transplant is a good treatment option. This is a procedure where a healthy kidney from another person's body is removed to replace your damaged or dysfunctional kidney. The new kidney takes over the functions of the failed kidney.
The surgeon places the new kidney in your abdomen and connects the related artery and vein to the new kidney. The blood then flows through the new kidney and produces urine and keeps you healthy.
Before you take a decision, make sure that you get evaluated at a transplant center. If the doctor recommends a transplant, he will also recommend a thorough medical evaluation. This will be a pre - transplant evaluation and will require a few visits to the hospital before the final evaluation is complete. The basic evaluation will begin with blood tests and X Rays.
Another important evaluation is the test for blood type to ensure that if an available kidney is a match for you.
The medical team working on your treatment will also evaluate whether you are fit enough to sustain a surgery. If you are suffering from some kind of cardio vascular disease or are undergoing treatment for cancer, you may not be a good candidate for kidney surgery. The transplant will then have very few chances of being a success.
The medical team will also want to evaluate donors. Family members who are willing to donate will also be evaluated.
Process
Kidney transplant from a living donor is scheduled in advance. The operation is carried out at the same time on the donor and the recipient. The operating rooms are generally located side by side. Just in case you are on the waiting list, you might need to hurry to the hospital as and when a kidney becomes available for transplantation. There will be a quick blood test and an anti body cross match test. A negative cross match means that you can proceed as the anti bodies will not react.
A general anesthetic is used and the operation generally takes 3 to 4 hours. A cut is made in the abdomen and the kidney is placed there. The arteries and veins are connected to the new kidney and the ureter is connected to the new kidney. As soon as the blood starts flowing through the kidney urine is produced. Sometimes it takes a while before this process starts.
Hospital stay is generally a week long and immediately after the surgery you feel better. Take your prescribed medications and follow the prescribed diet!

Happier and Healthier in 2016: New Years Resolutions That Work

Hello 2016! We welcome January with a sense of excitement and hope for the possibilities of change and accomplishments in the New Year. January is a time to think about change and for many of us that means setting a New Year's Resolution.
You may have heard that New Year's resolutions don't last. Some studies report that as few as five percent of New Year's resolutions are kept, and that most fail by the end of January. If the resolution involves diet and exercise, it will likely 'fail' by the time you read this article.
I don't think that not setting a New Years Resolution is the answer either. And, even if 95% of resolutions fail, that still means that 5% of people who set Resolutions achieve them!
If you don't set goals, (call it a New Years Resolution, intention, or whatever you like) you're missing out on a wonderful opportunity to live the life you want to live- to be the person you want to become.
In this article I'm going to walk you through a simple-step-by step process to create a New Years Resolution that works.
Step 1. Reflect on 2015. The New Year is not a blank slate- it's a continuation from years past. Take time to celebrate your successes and to acknowledge the areas where you struggled. Positive and negative experiences shape who you are and you can learn from both. Ask: What went well? What challenges did you face? What are some of your happiest moments? What lessons did you learn? Where are you at the end of the year compared to the beginning of the year? How did you do on last year's goals? If you take time to write down your review, you'll have the special gift of being able to read it again in the future.
Step 2: Dream. What do you want for 2016? This is your chance to dream! You may include specific goals such as "I want to run 10K this year" as well as vague goals such as "I want to be happier and healthier this year", or "I want to spend more time with my family", or "I want to travel more". Attach emotion and feeling to your dream. How do you want to feel?
Step 2 ½: Don't define success solely on result- especially when it comes to weight loss. Focus on getting healthier, becoming stronger, being more confident, along with action items related to that (I'll get to that part shortly). Usually the result of listening to your body and becoming healthier and happier is weight loss, if you have weight to lose, but don't let the number on the scale determine your success.
Step 3. Pick your top 1-3 dreams for 2016. Don't worry too much about missing out on other ones- usually by focusing on one goal, other goals will become easier, or happen naturally.
Step 4. Break down your goal in action items. Specific goals are easier to measure, such as a goal to run 10K. You either did, or you didn't do it. Intentions such as "to be happier" or "to spend more time with family" or "have a more positive body image" are more difficult to measure, but if you perceive you're happier, or that you spend more time with family (and your family agrees), that's all that matters.
In other words, don't get caught up on needing to measure every single intention. Instead, focus on the action steps. What do you need to do each day to become happier? Maybe it's starting a gratitude practice. Maybe it's scheduling recreation into each week. Maybe you need to work on a project that you are excited about doing. If your intention is to spend more time with family, you could take action by scheduling two electronic free evenings together as a family each week, or truly connect with your spouse each day.
Step 5. Turn those action items into goals. "You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret to your success is found in your daily routine"- John Maxwell.
When choosing action items, be realistic. You don't need to overhaul all your habits at once. Start with one or two items and build from there.
Some goals, such as a goal to run 10K can be mapped out over 90 days or so. But break each goal or intention down into daily habits that you can track one week at a time. I recommend weekly goals as they are more manageable, they are immediate wins (you can feel successful after one day or one week versus 30 days or more), and they get rid of procrastination.
Step 6. Track your daily habits. Life happens- and it's really easy to forget about spending more time with family, or packing your lunch, or keeping a gratitude practice when you have stressful deadlines at work, or you just don't 'feel like it'. I recommend using a daily habits success list to track your habits.
Step 7. Get support. You don't have to do it on your own. You can share your goals with a close friend, and give them a daily update, hire a coach or join a community of people who share a similar goal.
Step 8. Finally, give yourself the grace and space to fail, and to try again. One missed workout doesn't mean your New Years Resolution has failed. Look at the big picture and work on getting a little bit better. Great is the enemy of good.

Advancements for the Treatment of Gastric Health Problems

Acidity, stomach ulcers and heartburn are common health issues in India that come under Gastroenterology. While these diseases individually aren't grave, they could be a warning for a more serious health issue in the making. The main points to look out for is the severity and duration of gastric disorders. If any of these gastric issues continue to cause trouble, remember to consult the best gastroenterologist near you at the earliest. Ignoring health symptoms may lead to more severe health issues in the future.
One of the most common gastric problems among Indians is GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease). This gastric disease is especially prone in people who consume chilly-rich diet, fizzy drinks, smoking and even taking too many painkillers. About 20% of Indians have this disease which accounts for about 250 million people in the entire country. The head of Indian Society of Gastroenterology announced these numbers recently. Even though a huge number of people have this disease, there has been no permanent treatment to cure acid reflux problem. Usually, a person suffering from GERD is given medicines that he needs to be on throughout his life. The downsides of taking life-long medication also includes side-effects that such medication has on one's body.
Up until now, there wasn't any endoscopic treatment available but recently the head of Indian Society of Gastroenterology announced that a technique invented by a Japanese professor has been used to completely cure a patient with refractory acidity. The entire procedure takes almost half an hour and has been modified in such a way - making the complete procedure far less than what it costs in Japan. Not only is this technique expected to revolutionize the treatment of acidity - it will also help cure millions.
Soon, the head of Indian Society of Gastroenterology plans to conduct several seminars in different parts of the country teaching this novel and innovative procedure to other doctors. These experts include doctors in different cities of India who are keen to perform this technique (called Anti-reflux mucosectomy) on their patients suffering from this now curable disease.
Another study published in Clinical Hepatology journal suggests a strong link between the psychology and health of a person. It appears that in the case of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), psychological therapy can help in relieving symptoms such as stomach ache, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Although the western world does not recognize the connection between the body and mind, an obvious link can be observed in the case of IBS (called the brain gut axis). Since irritable bowel syndrome does not have any permanent treatment, different kinds of psychological therapies including hypnosis and cognitive therapies can help reduce the associated symptoms.
Hopefully, with these recent advancements in medicine, millions of people suffering from gastric disorders will be cured. Nonetheless, people need to comprehend the long term bad effects of not having a proper diet.
