    How To Live An Overall Healthy Life

    There are the obvious ways in which you can stay healthy and "live a long happy life," but I want to talk about some of my favorite tips to being healthy. I know what it takes to be a healthy person, but it's even hard for me sometimes. I read other peoples' blogs sometimes to give myself motivation. Sometimes your mind isn't enough. Sometimes you need other people to give you that push that you need to keep going. I've said it many times before and I'll say it again: food and fitness are not the only aspects of health. I like to help people be healthy, but it's going to take more than my words and my tips for you to follow through with your goals. One of my favorite tips is to cook meals that you know will fill you up. Also, make sure that it is something that you will enjoy eating, and that it will satisfy your cravings. The worst feeling ever is filling up on a bunch of food and realizing that you are still "hungry," because you have a craving for something more. Listen to your body when it tells you it needs something sweet. There are healthy things that are sweet. Eat an orange! Another tip what I have for my viewers is to be honest with yourself. If you're lying to yourself, how do you expect someone else to be truthful with you?! I'm talking honesty in all aspects. For example, for one, be honest with yourself if you need a cheat meal. It's okay to have a cheat meal to get through the week. Your week is going to be just horrible if you are constantly drowning yourself in lettuce. That's the physical aspect about being honest with yourself. The mental part about being honest is that you need to just be an honest person overall. You attract what you give. You don't want to get caught up with what you think you want and what you really need. Also, do not put too much on your body (or mind) that it cannot handle. Only you know what is too much, what is just enough, and what isn't enough. You have to push yourself in all aspects of life but not to the point of no survival.
    Relationships are another huge aspect to living an overall healthy life. You accept the love you think you deserve. That is why it's so important to not only have a healthy body, and a health mind, but also a love for yourself. You have to love yourself enough to know what you deserve. If someone isn't making any positive contributions to your life, then in all reality, they have no point in being there. Also, if there are more negative aspects to a relationship rather than positives, it's time to let go. Negativity in your relationships effects you more than you realize. It effects your confidence and your overall well being. Unfortunately, you are setting the standard for all of the following people to enter your life. They have to know how they need to treat you in order to stay in your life. If you allow people to walk all over you, they're going to.
    Another thing that I want to touch on is family. Some people in your life will come and go. Friends will most likely come and go. Boyfriends/girlfriends will come and go but family is blood and family is forever. You can't get rid of them. You were put with them for a reason and they are there to get you through the times when you feel as if you have no one. Yes, you may fight with your family. In fact, I fight more with my family than I do with my friends. But, I also forgive them much faster than anyone else. I know that they know me better than anyone else. They've known me longer than anyone else in my life and so has your family. While sometimes you may feel as though they don't know what you want... they know what you need and that's more important.
    Another huge part of living a healthy life is sleep. I'm sure you know that you're supposed to get enough sleep every night, but did you know that too much sleep is horrible for you? Did you know that there is a significant correlation between too much sleep and weight gain. I don't know the entire reason for that, but I do know that skipping breakfast is bad for your metabolism so I'm sure that that has something to do with it. For me, if I know that I have a long day ahead of me, I make sure that I get to bed very really. Ever since I got a Fitbit, I noticed how horrible my sleeping patterns are. Sometimes I'll go to bed around 10 and wake up at 8 and I'll still be exhausted. So, I check my Fitbit and I see that I only got 5 hours of sleep. I am obsessed with my Fitbit because it is so accurate. My dad wears one too and his says he gets good sleep, so it is different for everyone but I am so glad that I got one, because now I know why I have been so tired throughout the day after thinking I got 8+ hours of sleep.
    So, with all of that being said, I want everyone to be the best person they can be. Follow all aspects of health and don't just focus on the physical features. A healthy mind can mean a healthy life, too. I think everyone needs to focus more on the different parts of health. In fact, I would argue that weight is just a number. Muscle weighs more fat. People need to stop seeing the numbers on a scale as a representation of health. I learned to be happy with my weight, because I know that my body contains a lot of muscle.     4. Get enough sleep. Not only your reflexes and your brain slows down when it does not get enough rest, so does your digestive system. Hence, your metabolic rate decreases and instead of burning fat, your body cannot cope at it stores it. Get seven to eight hours of sleep a night regularly. If you get a chance, don't skimp on naps as well. However, don't over sleep. Some people who sleep 10 or more hours have a tendency to get sluggish.

    Holism, Health and Cannabis

    Holism is about the big picture; it relates to the theory that nothing happens in a vacuum. When seeking answers to a problem, holism puts the emphasis on the 'whole' rather than the parts.
    The English Oxford Dictionaries define holism:
    The theory that parts of a whole are in intimate interconnection, such that they cannot exist independently of the whole, or cannot be understood without reference to the whole, which is thus regarded as greater than the sum of its parts.
    And when holism is about health:
    The treating of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease.
    Another way to think about holism is by using the analogy of systems both natural and manmade (i.e. an ecosystem a health system, a family system, a solar system, etc.).
    A system is a complex 'whole' with a clear boundary; there is an outside and an inside. The content inside a system (for example: weather, animals, and plants) is made up of interrelated, interdependent parts that directly reflect the overall context, within which they exist, (for example: an ecosystem).
    Whenever the whole of anything produces an outcome greater than any of its parts could accomplish, individually, we call that synergy, (for example: a thunderstorm, the music of an orchestra).
    The opposite to holism, reductionism, instead analyzes something by its component parts.
    Holistic Health: Treating the Whole Person
    The traditional approach of the medical system has taught us to recognize health from a reductionist perspective. We go to the doctor to get some specific part of our body fixed because it has stopped functioning well and may be causing us pain.
    Millions of people get positive results using the medical-model. The only problem is that this model considers, almost exclusively, just the health of the body. And when it comes to mental health, the typical solution is to prescribe antidepressant medicine.
    Why is this a problem? We humans are complex beings. We have minds, emotions and a soul, the personal, intangible relationship to a macro reality beyond ourselves. What's more, who we are, is constantly influenced within the contexts of family, community, country and world.
    A holistic approach to health and wellness addresses the reality of these multiple interrelated and interdependent parts that make us who we are. The malaise of any one of them can directly (and negatively), affect the health of other parts of our life.
    For this reason alone, the first focus of holistic care is on the person and not the issue or disease. Stress, anxiety, and depression, for example, often end up translating to a physical symptom. It's all connected.

    Neuroplasticity: How to Improve It?

    Neuroplasticity is the ability of human brain to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. It allows the neurons (nerve cells) in the brain to compensate for injury and disease, and to adjust their activities in response to new situations or to changes in their environment.
    Our brain does this by axonal sprouting, in which undamaged axons grow new nerve endings to reconnect neurons whose links were injured or severed. Undamaged axons can also sprout nerve endings and connect with other undamaged nerve cells, forming new neural pathways to accomplish a needed function. For example, if one hemisphere of the brain is damaged, the intact hemisphere may take over some of its functions by reorganizing and forming new connections between intact neurons. In order to do so, the neurons need to be stimulated through an activity.
    Neuroplasticity is also called brain plasticity or brain malleability.
    Its Characteristics -

    • Most of us have very different behaviors and thoughts today than we had 25 years ago. This is because of action of neuroplasticity resulting in changes in brain structure and organization as we experience, learn, and adapt.
    • It is the 'muscle building' part of the brain. With every repetition of a thought or emotion, we reinforce a neural pathway. Similarly, with each new thought, we begin to create a new way of being.
    • As we age, change doesn't come so easily because the brain loses some of its plasticity and we become more fixed in how we think, learn, and perceive.
    How to improve neuroplasticity? - The research has shown conclusively that the brain can form new neural pathways and create neurons throughout life. Notwithstanding our genes we inherit, our lifestyle plays an important role in improving this unique quality of brain. The following are ways that help you improve your brain fitness by harnessing neuroplasticity:
    Do exercise regularly - Regular exercise and increased fitness promote brain functioning through a variety of mechanisms, including increased brain volume, blood supply and growth hormone levels.
    Undertake intermittent fasting - It is a great way to increase brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). In the brain, the BDNF protein is active at the connections between nerve cells (synapses), where cell-to-cell communication occurs. The synapses can change and adapt over time in response to experience, a characteristic called synaptic plasticity. Moreover, it detoxifies the body and recycles old proteins with new ones through the process of autophagy. The brain will benefit from this as well since a short fast has profound effects on neuronal autophagy.
    Do meditations regularly - There is a ton of evidence that regular meditation has profound effects on the brain. The neuroscientists now view meditation as the top way to upgrade your brain, with the potential to transform your life in many big ways. Mostly it has to do with increased attention span, improved memory and higher activity at the prefrontal cortex. There are also a number of studies showing that it enhances cortical thickness and the density of grey matter.
    Take adequate sleep - Sleep might be the most essential nutrient for neuroplasticity. The sleep deprived brain is muddled with connections, causing disorder of nervous information. Sleep restores that. Sleep provides a soft wipe of the brain, giving you the opening necessary to lay down new connections, form new memories, and learn new skills.
    Remove stress - Stress dampens neuroplasticity in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex while increasing it in the amygdala, which is associated with fear, anger, anxiety, and other autonomic emotional responses.
    Learn an instrument - Music training enhances brain plasticity. The research has found that children, who engage in musical training, show increases in IQ, verbal memory, and linguistic ability, even when the control group is composed of kids with otherwise similar backgrounds such as socioeconomic status, academics, etc. except for the music training. Merely listening to the same music doesn't have the same effect. You have to actively participate in its creation.
    Learn something new - The process of learning something new improves brain plasticity. Learning and practicing a new language or an art skill has been found to strengthen the brain.
    Read a novel - The researchers at Emory University have found that reading fiction creates heightened connectivity in the brain. Apart from this, reading stories provides a chance for you to relax.
