Authentic Partnerships

Think about a super partnership in your life. This may be with a family member, a coworker, or a dear friend. Now jot down all of the fine qualities that that individual possesses and how s/he adds to the value of your life. Kindness, organization, a good listener, a helper, someone who follows through... Those are just a few of the qualities that pop into my mind. Recently I have discovered, too, that I need those who are ready and willing to provide me with a hug of support when I am feeling down. What a difference this can make in making my spirits soar.

In relationship-centered care and relationship-centered situations, I would also like to think that my caregiver/my care partner/my instructor also exemplifies these characteristics. I realize that for many hugging is taboo, however, for me human touch is essential. I do know of friends who become nervous and discontent with touch and I have learned to carefully avoid entering space where I will not be welcome. This last awareness is vital for relationship-centered instances because it reflects that I truly understand the wants and needs of myself as well as those of another individual.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada worked in partnership with persons living with dementia to understand what it takes to develop an authentic partnership versus just being there and completing a job. Three guiding concepts include promoting empowerment and equality, sharing decision making responsibilities, and incorporating diverse perspectives. How valuable for one living with dementia to be appreciated as a thinking, feeling individual with particular outlooks, insights, perspectives, and desires.

First let's consider empowerment and equality. The best bosses I ever had appreciated my dedication and hard work, my willingness to try new things, my eagerness to demonstrate my talents and abilities. When reeling in was necessary, they also knew how to complete this without making me feel foolish, stupid, or as if I had wasted my time. They simply offered advice and a dose of reality and then set me loose once more to grow, develop, and create. Negative bosses, and fortunately there were few, sat in prey, ready to defeat me at every corner. I have avoided these people whenever I could or released myself form them as quickly as I possibly could.

I have also enjoyed being a critical part of decision making even though I have often lacked the authority to be the final voice. My views were accepted, evaluated, mulled, and perhaps reshaped (or set on a shelf for another time) for greater success. Never was I side-lined or tossed away as worthless. Well, okay, maybe once and I confess the feelings haunt me still.

Finally, it is so important to be able to take perspectives. I admit that there are times that I carry this to the extreme as a muddle through a plan trying to be certain that everyone is happy. Eventually I have been able to analyze the parts to create a successful home. No, this never pleases everyone but it most often gets the job done.

These 3 concepts are needed when supporting an individual with dementia. While sometimes his/her announcements and ideas do not appear to logically match the situation, they are still announcements and ideas of a human being. As a result I must listen, ask more questions, jot notes, maintain patience, and recognize when the discussion has become overwhelming and must be returned to at a later time. We must pause, take a breath, think and rethink, and then carry on with renewed hope and appropriate vigor. How lovely it is for each of us to be accepted for who and what we are; how beautiful it is to offer this same acceptance to someone with dementia.

Vegetable Gardens and Organic Manure Improves Yields

THE VEGETABLE garden which is common in both urban and rural areas is a good source of food that should be enhanced with knowledge and wisdom to sustain our families.

Most urban dwellers, especially those in low-density areas and have surplus land, are involved in market gardening.

A well-maintained garden with multiple crops like tomatoes, onion, beetroots, carrots, peas, beans, lettuce, strawberries, and green maize is not only good for the family members but also to the soil development.

Onions are crops with very little chances of being attacked by diseases because they are resistant to most diseases, which gives them an advantage.

Curing manure includes animal manure dug from the cattle's pen and heaped for a period of 3 to 6 months. Digging and heaping the manure increases the oxygen content in manure, which triggers microbial activity in the manure heap.

Gases like methane, ammonia and many others which are produced help to weaken and destroy weed seeds as the temperature in the heap may be above 80 degrees Celsius.

Selecting different plants to grow to provide a year-round supply of food, vegetables and a balanced diet to the family in both rural and urban areas.

Experts in agriculture say that growing multiple plants together is a good measure to minimize pests and make efficient social nutrients. Pets can be confused if a person can vary the crop vegetables.

Plants belonging to the same family should not be planted in the same place for a period over a year to avoid pests and diseases to build up in the soil.

Households around October should prepare many beds and also have time to prepare the soil by adding manure watering and loosening the soil for at list three months before planting crops.

Crops like maize, tomatoes, beetroots, carrots, garlic, onion, peas and beans can be planted in different beds parallel to each other to confuse pets. Again cops should be rotated to confuse on the ground pests as well as enriching the soil in order to improve on the yield.

Discover the Exercise Hormone Irisin

Exciting new research has proven the existence of a hormone that seems to increase during exercise and does amazing things for our health and metabolism.

Called the "exercise hormone," this muscle hormone was discovered by scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Because it's a chemical messenger it was named Irisin after a messenger Goddess. Although it's existence has been hotly debated in recent years, Harvard scientists, studying Irisin announced not long ago that the "data provided unequivocally demonstrates that human Irisin exists."

Irisin, normally present as part of a larger protein in the muscles cell's outer membrane, lies dormant and inactive until released. Exercise, and other factors help split this protein, releasing Irisin in the process.

So, now we know that Irisin exists and we also know that when we exercise our body makes more of it.

Why is this important? What does this hormone act on once we start pumping blood and our heart rate goes up?

It seems that the powerhouse hormone Irisin has the unique ability to it turn white fat into brown fat. White fat stores energy (calories) while brown fat is better for us because it's more involved in burning energy (increases our metabolism) rather than storing it. Brown fat intrigues scientists because it physically resembles muscle more than fat and plays a major role in maintaining normal weight. It also acts and behaves more like muscle than fat, which likely explains it's ability to burn fat so efficiently.

Slender people have more brown fat than obese people. Younger people have more brown fat than seniors and those with normal blood sugar levels enjoy the benefits of more brown fat than people with high blood sugar.

Obesity, a disorder of fat accumulation, is a real problem in the world today. It is the result of over-eating and under exercising. Increased Irisin levels help to increase glucose tolerance and reduce insulin resistance, suggesting it may be a real breakthrough in treating diabetes.

But, the benefits of this new, exciting "exercise" hormone don't stop there. Irisin offers other valuable benefits, such as triggering the growth of new brain neurons and activating genes involved in memory retention and learning. Getting and Staying Connected Is Powerful

Here are a few tips for getting and staying connected to enrich your body and your soul plus these can provide a tremendous surge in brain stimulation. First, nurture existing relationships as you cultivate new ones. You have to be a friend to have a friend so schedule time and energy to share with others. Remember, too, that there are many lonely people - become a friend to someone who needs one. You might just offer the magic elixir for good health.

Schedule time for friends as you schedule private time for yourself. Life is busy - we can get going about 300 MPH and lose track of something very important - our friends. Call, set a time and place, then follow through. And sometimes, after all of those friendly visits, you just need some down time, time to think, reflect, take a walk, write a letter, or curl up with a cozy blanket and a wonderful book.

As you find more time and energy in your life because of the way you have scheduled time and improved your life with good friends you will find to have time to volunteer. Volunteer to help out to the degree you feel willing and capable. Volunteer where your heart speaks and your soul directs - at a school, for respite, to assist a friend.

This next one comes almost automatically if you have followed the guidance of the aforementioned suggestions. Become involved and socialize. Doing something important adds life value and personal spirituality. You can and do make a difference.

Perhaps one of your new goals (yes, yes, yes) is taking up a bit more physical exercise. Remaining physically active means that the more you do the more capable you become.
