Not
all injuries and medical issues have symptoms that are easy to
diagnose. Sometimes the symptoms are invisible. In order to understand
the kind of injury or ailment you are suffering from, physicians conduct
various types of diagnostic tests. Blood tests and X-rays are the two
most common tests that are carried out. Here is everything you need to
know about these tests.
X-rays: A Lifesaver
X-rays
is an imaging technique that uses electromagnetic radiation to check
what is happening in your body without cutting it open. X-rays can be
conducted on all parts of the body. In urgent care, you can expect the
doctor to order an X-ray if they suspect that you may have a broken
bone, or if you are suffering from lung conditions, or digestive system
problems among others.
If you are worried about radiation
exposure, there is no cause for concern. As long as you don't have
X-rays frequently, you do not get exposed to high dosage of radiation.
Hence, it does not pose a major health risk.
The Importance of Blood Tests
Sometimes,
it is necessary to draw blood to get complete blood count. The test
examines your white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, and the
proportion of red cells to plasma. Looking at the results, doctors can
determine if there is an underlying problem. If they find something
amiss, they may request further tests to find the exact cause of your
health problem.
To take your blood, a phlebotomist will tie
tourniquet around your upper arm. You will be asked to make a fist with
your hand to allow the vein to pop out. Using a needle and syringe, the
phlebotomist will draw the amount of blood needed for the test. The
tourniquet will then be removed and a sticky tape will be put on the
puncture wound, and you are done.
Minor Injury Care
Urgent
care deals with minor cuts, wounds, lacerations, abrasions, minor
fractures, tendonitis, sprains, minor burns, infected wounds, and
removing foreign objects. Based on the type of injury, you may have to
have an X-ray or a nurse will clean, disinfect and dress your wound.
You
may need a tetanus shot, as well, which the nurse will give you.
Depending on the amount of pain you are in, the doctor may prescribe OTC
painkillers. If you have a dressing, you may have to come in everyday
to get the dressing changed. The nurse will give you tips on how to care
for your wound or injury at home.
The blood tests, X-rays and
injury care provided by urgent care centers aim to ease the burden on
emergency rooms. So, if you have a non-life-threatening health condition
or injury that requires prompt medical attention, urgent care is the
place for you.
