Mini
gastric bypass is a simple and short inexpensive technique in weight
loss surgery. It is basically a simplified form of Roux-en-Y gastric
bypass surgery. In the mini procedure, more of the intestine is bypassed
compared to the standard gastric procedure. Your pre-operative weight,
height and weight loss expectations that you have will help your surgeon
decide the actual length of the bypass but it is usually between three
to around seven feet. In the mini gastric bypass, bile and digestive
enzymes are not diverted from your stomach.
Whereas the mini
gastric bypass surgery is less costly and shorter, not very many people
choose to have it. This is probably because most insurance companies do
not cover it as it is considered experimental in some circles of
medicine. However, a good number of people are still going for the
surgery thanks to the numerous benefits it has. It is good to know the
pros and cons of the surgery before choosing to go ahead with it.
The pros
·
The mini bypass decreases the risk of co-morbidities. These are
conditions resulting from morbid obesity. It relieves obesity symptoms
like sleep apnea, diabetes, edema and arthritis.
· It is less
invasive, hence safer. The surgery involves fewer incisions compared to
the standard gastric bypass surgery and this does not only make it safer
but also reduces complications.
· It is so much shorter in terms
of operating and recovery. The mini surgery takes not more than an hour
and the patients are allowed to leave hospital in 24 hours only.
·
It involves less rerouting of the intestines. This means that it is
technically easier, even for the surgeons to perform the surgery with
higher success rates.
· It has reduced chances of complications because it has a fewer intestine connection or anastomosis.
· It is less expensive compared to the standard gastric bypass.
·
Patients are able to get back to normal activities within a week; the
healing process is relatively quick because the procedure is less
invasive.
The cons
· High risks of
malabsorption and vitamin and mineral deficiency complications. This is
because a large portion of small intestines gets bypassed during the
procedure.
· Chances of bile reflux gastritis. This is considering
that mini gastric bypass surgery does not divert the bile and digestive
enzymes from stomach, hence chances of the condition that can be hard
to treat.
· Even though the mini surgery is less invasive, it
still carries potential infection risks. Leakage or infection among
staples connecting revised stomach pouch and intestines cannot be ruled
out.
· Dumping syndrome may occur. This happens when the food
tends to pass too quickly through the digestive track this leading to
dizziness, diarrhea and nausea.
· Possibility of complications
similar to Roux-en-Y gastric surgery with the most common being surgical
site hernias, ulcers and other minor infections.
When considering
the weight loss procedure, it is important that you get familiar with
mini gastric bypass surgery pros and cons so you know exactly what to
expect. Your surgeon should be in a position to make you feel as
comfortable as possible without hiding all important details.
