"Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by anyone, but coaxed downstairs one step at a time."
- Mark Twain (1835-1910)
The nature of habit is insidious and
sticky. And although some habits adhere with unerring and unfortunate
ease, we're left with the same dilemma no matter the habit: how to get
undogged.
Having recovered from chronic alcoholism (weekend
binge-drinking) and cigarette smoking, and having dealt with numerous
other recoveries, overeating one of them, I can speak in a way with
which you will probably concur.
I tried numerous times to fling
habits out the window. That is to overcome them, cold turkey, without a
strategy, or with a strategy that was ill-fated. Almost every time I
failed. Because I didn't establish a solitary habit in countering a
moment that always comes.
Something AA taught me was the
importance of honesty. It's on the turning away that we're done in when
on our attempt to recover. And there are moments when we're tempted,
where the decision to lapse comes through turning away.
We
dissociate from ourselves in these moments, through a little lie
believed, a pivotal denial, a dangerous compromise. Such a turning away
renders the days, weeks, months, sometimes years, of hard work, vain.
The
way recovery works is focus one day at a time, as Twain suggests, one
step at a time. It's not rocket science. But it is a commitment to not
turning away, which is to stay truthful with ourselves, faithful to our
cause.
Being honest, one day at a time, consistently and faithfully ever after, is the way to recover from every nasty habit.
The
imperative, then, is to stay honest. Be honest each step of the way and
we can achieve anything that is possible for us to achieve.

How To Keep Your Spine Happy And Healthy
There
are several things you can try in order to help your spine as healthy as
possible as well as reduce complications from your back condition.
Tips For Keeping Your Spine Healthy
Rest your spine while sleeping - Once you are lying down, all the structures in your spine that worked all day can finally relax and rejuvenate. It is very important for you to use pillows and mattress to let your spine rest in a comfortable and supported way. Your choice of pillow and mattress is often based on personal preference, your specific neck or back problem, or your preferred sleep positions.
Find time to exercise your core in order to strengthen your back muscles and abs - Your core muscles (abdominal and lower back muscles) must be strong and supple to support your spine. It must be capable of taking the pressure off your lower back. Be reminded that most of the core muscles are rarely used on a daily basis. Hence, they must be toned via targeted exercises. These exercises are very simple and can only be done in 20-30 minutes every day.
Choose shoes that will support your spine - The kind of shoes you wear will have a huge impact in supporting your lower back. Good shoes will provide a supportive base that will help the body and spine remain in alignment. For instance, you need to make sure that the shoe will snugly fit the back of your heels. A good fit will prevent supination/pronation or too much rolling of the foot to the inside or outside.
Always practice good ergonomics whilst sitting - The discs in your lower spine are loaded thrice as much as when you are sitting as compared to when you are standing. Long periods of sitting will aggravate or create a painful back condition. If sitting at a desk, people usually slouch and lean forward. Doing this will stress your lumbar discs. It is indeed very important for you to choose the right office chair as well as practice good posture whilst seated. Most importantly, always avoid sitting for long periods by getting up to stretch and walk around every 20-30 minutes. For your spine to stay healthy, you need to move frequently. Movement will fuel the spine with healthy nutrients.
Reap the benefits of massage - A good massage helps boost endorphins in your bloodstream. Also, it can encourage blood flow that helps bring healing nutrients to the affected area and boost healing. Chiropractic treatments can also help.

Are Your Adrenal Glands in Trouble?
Are Your Adrenal Glands in Good Shape?
First, a little background. Our two adrenal glands, part of the ultra-connected endocrine system, sit atop our two kidneys, looking a bit like floppy berets. While they don't look significant, they play a huge role in health. As in HUGE.
Very few doctors understand the adrenals and how they work. And, unless you're at death's door, adrenal blood tests are pointless. The medicos lack of knowledge means their adrenal treatments don't help--and may do harm.
My adrenals haven't done their duty since a drunk driver crashed into my parents' car when I was a baby. So I've had a lifetime of opportunity to learn how the adrenals work and what to do when they don't work.
The last time I went to an endocrinologist, I had to explain to her how adrenals function and why the blood test doesn't work. After she checked to see if I was correct, she got all excited and hoped I'd become a regular patient so she could learn more.
What do adrenals do?
In general, adrenals think everything that happens in the body is their business, so the list of their activities is long and varied, but let's look at some basics.
• The smaller part of the adrenal gland creates the fight-or-flight hormones, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine which prepare us for battle when a Bengal tiger (or an everyday stress equivalent) appears on the scene.
• The larger part of the gland creates fifty (at last count) different hormones, most of which are still a mystery. Some, though, are known, if not completely understood.
• Aldosterone balances our minerals, which helps keep our blood pressure in check. Our diet and supplements have to supply the minerals, otherwise the whole business doesn't work.
• Androgens produce sex hormones. And when age slows the production of estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, the adrenals jump in to keep everything going along, singing a song. Which can't happen if the adrenals are in trouble.
• And then there's cortisol, which is a three-ring circus all by itself. It helps normalize blood sugar, fights inflammation, helps control blood flow, pumps up your immune system to prevent things like allergies and autoimmune diseases, and prevents damage to your small intestine, which allows you to digest your food.
• While it's generally believed that cortisol always revs thing up, our bodies actually use it to tame fight-or-flight stress. As in, the tiger's gone, so you can relax now.
Signs your adrenals aren't keeping up
• You drag through the day, but have a burst of energy right about bedtime. Fatigue comes along with many endocrine problems, but that late burst of energy points to the adrenals.
• Frequent sighing, of which you are unaware, but are frequently reminded.
• Heavy menstrual periods that flow for about three days, then stop for a day, then flow again for another three days or so. It's the stop that shouts "adrenal problems."
• Sudden noises have you leaping for the ceiling. Doctors call this an exaggerated startle response.
• Your sweet tooth and salt cravings are really hard to resist.
• Rising from a chair, or any seated position, makes you momentarily dizzy.
• Your stomach acid is low, which means poor digestion. This starts a tsunami of problems, some large and some small, including, frequently, fingernails with vertical ridges.
• Allergies. After a while, you wonder if you somehow joined an "Allergy of the week" club.
• Moments of confusion that make you worry about your brain dying.
• Your back itches a lot.
• A poochy belly that won't go away.
• Mood swings, vitiligo, heart palpitations, depression, and on, and on, and on.
Signs your adrenals are in really big trouble
Eventually, the adrenals can get "stuck" in stress mode. You still have the symptoms listed above (and a whole lot more), but these additional symptoms say you're in heap, big trouble. For one thing, your nervous system is involved and so are other body parts. These symptoms include:
• Intense muscle cramps on the outside of your lower legs during the night.
• Getting to sleep is a problem; so is staying asleep. Getting up in the morning can be kind of a trick, too.
• Urinating every two or three hours, day and night, becomes routine. At night, it's sometimes hard to get back to sleep after trips to the bathroom. This always gets blamed on prostate problems, but being female or having symptoms of whacked adrenals point in another direction.
Adrenal problems don't resolve easily. And we're pretty much on our own to get the job done. It's more than a little daunting.
To get the help you need, my Moving to Health program steps you through the multitude of things that need fixing if you want your adrenals to prosper. Since we're all unique beings, the "multitude of things" that have to be fixed varies from person to person.
We all want health problems to get fixed overnight, but adrenals will continue to struggle until all the contributing problems have been handled, so we have to take a step-by-step approach, moving closer to health as we go.
Let me end with some really good news: You can do this.

The 5 Tools a Surgeon Must Have
In
the medical profession, the most demanding and complex nature of the
job is that of the surgeon- who has to take innumerable variables and
conditions into account before and during each procedure. For a surgeon,
each moment on duty is crucial for even an instant of the plan going
wrong can put the patient's health and life in jeopardy. That is why
pre-planning is always important for a surgeon and the most important
part of pre-planning is getting the right tools or equipment from the
best hospital equipment suppliers or surgical instrument suppliers.
Being a surgeon always requires you to have some tools ready before you enter the operation theatre. Here, we mention and explain the 5 most important tools for a surgeon.
1. Operating Scissors
For any surgeon, the operating scissors is one of the first few tools required in a surgical procedure. The quality of the pair of scissors being used is very crucial, irrespective of the task being performed- cutting through the dressing or the body tissue. When it comes to the quality, you just can't expect a pair of scissors that is warped, rusty or jammed up. Thus, getting a good pair of operating scissors that are durable is a must for all surgeons.
2. Scalpels
The scalpel is the instrument that first comes to an ordinary individual's mind when we talk about a surgeon. A scalpel for the surgeon should ideally be like an extension of the arm, with the smooth movement of its own. The surgeon should be deft in handling the scalpel and should be able to cut smoothly and cleanly. Just like the pair of scissors, the scalpel too needs to be of the best quality and thus its condition cannot be taken for granted. If the surgeon is buying surgical instruments online, a reputed brand can assure good quality.
3. Retractor
Another typical tool in the arsenal of a surgeon is the retractor. It might not be that common, but when it comes to application, it is one of the most important tools used. A retractor is generally used to expose the organ, tissue or the lesion being operated on. Not being able to see properly while performing the operation can not only risk the procedure, but the patient's well-being and life as well. Thus making the choice of choosing the right retractor can change everything during a surgery.
4. Tweezers
Even though tweezers are often regarded as common tools with little significance, they come in very handy when the surgeon needs to remove foreign objects from inside the body. Also, there are situations in which the movement around delicate organs is very complex. In such cases as well, tweezers are preferred by the surgeons.
5. Forceps
Irrespective of the speciality of the surgeon, a professional one will always need a firm grip over their equipment, especially their forceps. The forceps are needed throughout the procedure and hence their quality should also be of the top standard. During the surgery, the surgeon shouldn't be worrying about the tissue hiding or going back in again. Thus, forceps become one of the most essential apparatus in making the surgery successful.
Gloves too are used extensively but have not been counted as tools as they are for personal protection as well as infection prevention. There are other tools as well, but the ones listed above are the most commonly used surgical instruments.

Debunking Old Wives' Tales
Does
going out with wet hair give you a cold? Do toads really give warts?
Does shaving really make your beard grow faster? Our childhood is
peppered with anecdotes that our grandparents give to us, which they
might have got from their own grandparents. But beyond all the tips to
lose weight, tips to conceive, hygiene tips and what not, there really
is no proof that these 'Old Wives' Tales' actually work. The intentions
behind them might be for the best, but when it comes to health, you
can't leave it to the imagination. That's what you have science for.
Back your tips for a healthy life with facts, as we debunk some Old
Wives' tales for you:
1) Cracking knuckles leads to arthritis
While cracking your knuckles may not exactly be beneficial, they are not harmful too. When you crack your knuckles, you're merely creating air cavities in your joint due to elongation of muscles. The popping sound is of the gas escaping. So the next time you have the urge to crack your knuckles, do so without the fear of getting arthritis.
2) Chocolate helps with pre-menstrual cramps
If you believed what everyone said, chocolate would be the cure for every disease in the world. But truth be told, while chocolate might help you with your cravings, but it sure doesn't help with the pre-menstrual cramps. What works for pre-menstrual cramps is exercise for pregnant women. Sorry, chocolate lovers.
3) Carrots improve your vision
What started off as rumor during the second world war, has manifested as one of Grandma's favorite dinner time myth. While carrots might certainly be one of the healthiest food for kids to eat, it won't do anything to improve your eyesight. It however certainly provides Vitamin A that helps prevent night blindness.
4) Spicy food causes ulcers
If the spicy food was the main reason behind ulcers, then the Mexicans would be the first one to complain. But fortunately, it's not the reason. Spicy foods may aggravate the discomfort from existing ulcers, but the main reason is excessive use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
5) Exercise is a strict no-no after heart attack
Of all the myths about heart diseases, this one is the most dangerous of them all. A heart attack survivor's first step of rehabilitation is to get active. Indulging in exercises prescribed by your heart specialist is a must for preventing any recurrence.
There's nothing wrong in heeding the advice of your parents and grandparents. After all, they only have the best of intentions. It gets wrong when we stop fact-checking them. Instead, educate your loved ones about the correct reasoning behind them. For when it comes to health, it pays to be smart.

Hinged Knee Braces
This
type of knee brace is used to support your knee joint along with the
surrounding tissues but allows your knee to maintains flexibility. There
are many different designs that come from a number of manufactures. A
hinged knee brace, in general, will consist of some type of wrap that
will wrap around your leg at your knee. There will be a hole over your
kneecap and hinges on either side of your knee joint. This type of
medical equipment is used by many recreational and professional athletes
as a preventative measure and in response to an injury.
More than one type of condition or injury can benefit from using such medical equipment. Most of these are low-grade or minor but there are also different types of injuries that are more severe along with acute conditions that can benefit from this brace. There are two common knee injuries, which can benefit from such type of medical equipment. This includes two strains of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). When an athlete wears this hinged type of medical equipment, it helps to stabilize and support the joint. This can help to prevent further injury and bring relief from the pain.
Using such a medical equipment for the knee can also benefit people who are suffering from tendinitis, runner's knee, and patellar or meniscus injuries. Other medical conditions that a hinged knee brace can help include inflammation from myositis, bursitis, and arthritis. The brace can also help those who have Osgood-Schlatters disease. Sometimes after having surgery on your knee you will wear this type of knee brace to help protect the tissues that have been repaired surgically during the process of healing.
You can get a hinged knee brace in many different configurations. These braces can be double or single hinged. They may or may not have a compression wrap or sleeve that will envelop your knee except for a window over your kneecap. In addition, some have only the bands and hinges that circle your leg below and above your knee. These types of braces only provide stability and lateral support.
You cannot purchase such a type of medical equipment over-the-counter. Only a qualified health professional or physician can recommend this type of brace. It is not a knee brace that should be used as a cure for any injury or condition. A hinged knee brace is only intended to help prevent various medical conditions and injuries or as one part of a treatment. On their own, they cannot repair or cure knee problems. A knee brace should not be a substitute for proper medical care because this could result in aggravating an existing condition or in a more severe injury.

The Crazy Grip of Fear
Isn't
fear a crazy emotion, your imagination can play incredible tricks on
you. Even healthy adults can be almost paralyzed by imagined footsteps
in the dark, to other imagined events. We all know the feeling your
heart starts pumping fast, your mouth becomes dry, you become breathless
and horrid visions enter your brain. All this as adrenalin pumps
through your body. The chances are it was just an imagined event; FEAR
is an imagined Event Appearing Real.
If however the fear is regarding an event like an interview or exam etc. it is probably caused by expecting a bad outcome, but these fears can be reduced by learning to control them. I have been reading "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway" by Susan Jeffers, she offers many suggestions and exercises for outwitting the menace of fear. You can learn to beat depression ill-health and much more. So if you are suffering, or would like to be more confident and make more of your life you might like to read it.
Fear can take hold with an insidious grip if you are suffering from ill-health. Very quickly you can imagine miner symptoms are warnings of major illness. Unless you keep a firm grip on your imagination it can soon run amok. The best thing to prevent this is to keep your mind occupied and or you hands busy find interesting things to do, read books do crosswords etc. Feed you mind with health related positive thoughts, definitely nothing negative!
Now on a positive note how great, we are approaching a New Year again, with fresh new promises for the year ahead... What will your New Year's Resolutions be? If you believe passionately enough, visualize daily and make an action plan you will be amazed what you can achieve. Over the years I have made this work for me many times. More recently we found a way to buy a house in Spain, so that we could spend warm sunny winters there, also I set up an internet business. So now my New Year's Resolutions are to get back into good health and crack on with my business.
If an online business appeals to you affiliate marketing is a simple way to start-online. Begin with the help and guidance of a coach and mentor to make your journey faster and easier. You can then start earning commissions whilst you are learning the techniques necessary. You will also have the companionship of others learning the new skills too.
So whatever your New Years plans are, I wish you great success, health and happiness.
